The prospect-rich Arizona Farm League is in full swing. That means it is the perfect time for Baseball Farm to name its first Prospects of the Week team!
Here are our Prospects of the Week for October 16 through October 22, 2017:
Hitter of the Week
C – Andrew Knizner – Surprise Saguaros (MLB Parent: St. Louis Cardinals)
The Cardinals 7th-round pick in the 2016 draft has followed up a strong 2017 campaign (.302/.349/.471 between A-Full and AA) with a great Arizona Fall League performance so far. This week, Knizner hit safely in all 4 games, racking up 15 total bases, scoring 3 runs and racking up 5 RBIs. On 10/20 against Mesa, Knizner impressed by launching 2 home runs in a 2-for-4 effort. Knizner is now batting .393 in 7 AFL games with a 1.076 OPS.
C – Alex Jackson – Peoria Javelinas (MLB Parent: Atlanta Braves)
Jackson went 7-for-16 with 2 HR this week for the Javelinas.
3B – Eric Filia – Peoria Javelinas (MLB Parent: Seattle Mariners)
Filia racked up 11 total bases this week with a 8-for-15 performance across 4 games, including 3 multi-hit efforts.
Pitcher of the Week
RHP – Albert Abreu – Scottsdale Scorpions (MLB Parent: New York Yankees)
This Dominican pitching prospect has impressed in his 2 AFL outings so far. This week, Abreu made a 5-inning start against Glendale at Camelback Ranch on 10/17. Abreu pitched 5 scoreless frames, striking out 8 batters while only allowing 2 hits and 2 walks. Abreu was limited this season due to shoulder issues (49 innings), but he should be on your watch list heading into 2018. He’s been lights out in the AFL so far, posting a 0.90 ERA and an 11:3 K:BB ratio in 10 innings of work.
RHP – Max Fried – Peoria Javelinas (MLB Parent: Atlanta Braves)
On 10/16, Fried faced the minimum over 5 innings of work against Salt River. Fried was close to untouchable, only allowing 1 hit and 1 walk while notching 4 strikeouts.
