The AFL is winding down for the fall, but this past week saw some more excellent performances out of some of baseball’s top prospects.
Here are our Prospects of the Week for November 5 through November 12, 2017:
Hitter of the Week
SS – Nicky Lopez – Surprise Saguaros (MLB Parent: Kansas City Royals)
Lopez, who has drawn attention in Arizona this fall with a sweet left-handed swing, dominated AFL pitching this week en route to picking up our Player of the Week honors. Lopez went 7-for-17 on the week with 13 total bases, 2 home runs, 4 runs scored, and 6 runs batted in. Lopez launched a grand slam on November 11 to give the Saguaraos the lead in the game. He’s now hitting .392 in 18 fall league games. If he can combine an improved bat with his already strong defense and speed, he becomes a toolsy player that all dynasty leaguers need to watch.
Pitcher of the Week
RHP – James Needy – Salt River Rafters (MLB Parent: Miami Marlins)
Not much of a prospect anymore at 26 years old, Needy capped off an up-and-down fall league (4.26 ERA) with a very strong performance this week. In his outing on November 7 against Scottsdale, Needy punched out 9 batters in 4 innings of work, scattering 2 hits and 1 walk. A strong start from a prospect who might be taking his last shot at moving up to the Majors.
