Farmhands of the Week: 8/13-8/19

Continuing with our new format, here are Baseball Farm’s Farmhands of the Week for the twentieth week of the season, August 13 thru August 19, 2018.

Each week, we search the boxscores and use our own proprietary roto weighting system to pick one hitter and one pitcher who had the best week at each minor league level.

Wilson turned in one of the most dominant pitching performances in baseball this year. He’s just 20, but he’s mowing down hitters at AAA. Wilson recently switched to a 4-seam fastball grip from his trusty 2-seamer, and the results have been electric. John Eshelman of 2080 Baseball likes his chances as at least a #4 starter in the Bigs. We will find out soon if he’s going to live up to that billing, as Bryse has been called up by the Braves.

Dugger, an 18th round pick for the Mariners in the 2016 draft, has struggled a bit upon his promotion to AA this year (4.53 ERA in 15 starts). However, he was excellent in his start this week against a Pensacola Blue Wahoos team with some solid hitters (TJ Friedl, Jose Siri, Shed Long). He shut them down over 7-innings, punching out 9 batters while scattering 5 hits and 3 walks.

An international signing by the Phillies way back in 2014, Medina, now 21, keeps climbing the MiLB ladder. The pitcher-friendly Florida State League was a challenge for him this season (4.39 ERA in 19 starts). But this week, he was dealing. 12 Ks in a 7-inning start against Bradenton, scattering 4 hits and walking 0.

The kid from Worcester, Mass. picked up the win with a 6-inning outing on August 15th at Batavia. Economos, 23, is old for Short-Season ball, but he had an excellent outing this week and was worthy of the FOTW team this week. He punched out 9 batters in 6 shutout innings while allowing 2 hits and 1 BB. He’s made 3 starts and appeared in 10 more games out of the pen for the West Virginia Black Bears this summer.

Lots of great pitching performances at the Rookie Level this week. Chavez Fernander gets the nod for putting together 2 great outings and also having a really unique name. Chavez, 6’3″, 205 lbs., is a right-hander from Freeport, Bahamas, and was a 35th round choice this summer.

Urias hit everything in sight this week, posting 4 separate 3-hit performances en route to a .592 batting average on the week. He’s got a great hit tool and will always be a high contact guy. Some are predicting a power breakout for Luis, and if it comes to fruition, he’s going to be a big time performer. If he doesn’t? Joe Panik 2.0?

Solak was sent to Tampa Bay in a 3-way trade that brought Brandon Drury to the Bronx. A 2nd-round pick out of Louisville in the 2016 draft, Solak looks like he’s ready to contribute in the bigs very soon. This week, he slugged an even 1.000 and racked up 20 TBs in 20 ABs. He’s posted an excellent .836 OPS with 18 HR and 21 SBs this season.

This week’s FOTW has now racked up 49 HRs in 164 games since turning pro in 2017. Casey was the Rockies 20th round draft choice out of UNC-Wilmington. The power is legit, and this year he’s been great on the basepaths as well, going 22-for-29 in stolen base attempts. He’s 23 and still at A-Full Season ball to probably work on the swing-and-miss in his game (152 Ks this year), but he’s a fun power/speed flyer to follow.
