2018 Farmhand Crop: Niko Hulsizer

Niko Hulsizer

Niko Hulsizer – Bottom Line

Listed at 6’2”, 200 lbs. I’d guess maybe 210-215, no projection left. Any weight he adds will shave off some speed. Good strong arms, good strong legs on this kid. Baseball ass as well. Dead lifted 545 lbs in college:

Hit (25/45)

Right-handed bat. Sets up a little knock-kneed, slightly closed stance. Short stride, stamps down left foot quickly. Hands and wrists are quick and strong. Can cover the outer half of the plate no problem. Uppercut stroke, probably will always have a good amount of swing and miss in his game.

Power (35/60)

Good upper body strength, very good hand/wrist strength. Uppercut stroke. Won 2017 College HR derby. Pull-side power, but will take the ball the other way. Has enough strength to flash oppo power as well. Plus raw-power.

Speed (50/45)

Average to fringe-plus speed. He’s aggressive on the basepaths. If he gains any more weight or muscle, I could see him slowing down a tick to average speed. Ran 6.94 60-yard dash in HS, which is a 50 on the 20/80 scale.

Defense (45/50)

Has big athleticism, doesn’t have a big arm. I’ve seen scouts project that he’s capable of playing CF, but I don’t see it. Should be athletic enough to stick as a LF. He’s started 20 games in RF vs. 4 games in LF so far in the Pioneer League.

Started right away in the Rookie level Pioneer League. This is the expected placement for Hulsizer, I’d anticipate that he remains in the Pioneer League for the remainder of 2018.

25.2% K-rate, 15.7% BB-rate. The K-rate is not a surprise, I think he will be at or near this level for his entire professional career. The hit tool just isn’t there to do much more. However, the 15.7% BB-rate is very intriguing. Lifted his BB-rate to 10.1% in his Junior year at Morehead State. Power and patience profiles always play. .314 hitter his Junior year of college. Really nice batted ball profile so far: 39.7% GB, 23.8% LD, 26.5% FB.

.270 ISO in 127 Rookie Level PAs, with 6 HR and 9 2B. .301 ISO Junior year of college. .426 ISO Sophmore year, when he set the Morehead State and OVC record with 27 HRs. 26.1% HR/FB rate will come back to earth. Slugged .450 with a .208 ISO using wood bats in the NECBL in 2017. The power is real.

8-for-10 SBs in Rookie ball so far. I don’t see plus speed when I watch him, but he’s a very aggressive player. He’s probably feasting on lower-level pitching and catching in the Pioneer League. Only stole 3 bags in each of his Sophomore and Junior years in college. 6.2 speed score in Rookie ball so far is great.

All stats current as of August 11th.
