Between good pitching and timely offense, the Burlington Royals were able to fight off the enemy and protect home field with a victory over the Kingsport Mets.
With their win, the Royals now hold the best record (5-2) in the Appalachian League. Monday’s game between the B-Royals and K-Mets was the only game played in the Appy League.
Angel Zerpa earned the win in his second start of the season, tossing five innings of two-run ball while striking out four. Burlington also got some help on the offensive side of the ball thanks to two home runs.
Jesus Atencio hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning that put the Royals up on Kingsport, 5-2. Maikel Garcia added to the fun with an RBI single, which put the Royals up 6-2. Jake Means hit his second home run, which was a solo shot in the fifth inning to advance the Royals lead to 7-2.
The K-Mets scored a run each in the eight and ninth innings, but ultimately couldn’t complete a comeback, falling 7-4.
The two teams square off again tomorrow in game two of the three game set. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
