Big AFL renews hope for elite producer up the middle after up-and-down 2019
The former No.1 overall pick Royce Lewis had a regular season that left many questioning his future, though he was never fully healthy after getting banged up in the Florida State League. Just a couple of weeks rest made a huge difference in the Arizona Fall League.
The Twins did not have a shortstop spot available in the Arizona Fall League for Lewis to continue building on the strong work he’s done to show himself as a potential above-average shortstop. Lewis still wanted to attend the AFL and he was willing to attend in a utility position. Overall, Lewis played a dozen games at third base, four games at second, five games in centerfield, and the final game of the AFL regular season at shortstop. He received extremely high marks for his defensive showing at every position, with multiple rating him as a potential plus third baseman or centerfielder if he ever ended up moving.
Lewis’ bat was the big thing, as he was able to find himself among the top five in average, on-base, and slugging while also showing power and speed with 12 extra-base hits and five steals. Lewis should open in Double-A Pensacola this season, but could move to Triple-A and should get a late-season look with the potential to profile as a high-average hitter at the top of the lineup with above-average power and speed while playing a quality shortstop or potential plus defense at third or center.
